The CNRST is a State Public Authority with Scientific, Cultural and Technical nature (EPSCT) in charge of scientific and technological research in Burkina Faso. The CNRST enjoys legal personality and financial autonomy, and is subjected to the joint supervision of the Minister of Scientific Research and Innovation and the Minister of Finance. The activities of the CNRST cover many important areas of the socio-economic life of Burkina Faso. The research activities of the CNRST are carried out by 4 institutes: the Environment and Agricultural Research Institute (INERA), the Applied Sciences and Technological Research Institute (IRSAT), the Health Sciences Research Institute (IRSS) and the Institute of Sciences of Society (INSS).
IRSS conducts research (focus on health policies and systems, maternal and child health, nutrition, infectious and parasitic diseases, and other) that can provide solutions to priority health problems, coordinate research in the health sector in Burkina Faso, and disseminate the results of the research. In addition to the research activities, the department assists in the training and supervision of students and trainees in universities and health training facilities. Halidou Tinto is a Professor of parasitology and global health at the University of Bobo-Dioulasso in Burkina Faso from 2016. Professor Tinto founded the Clinical Research Unit of Nanaro (CRUN) in Burkina Faso as part of the IRSS. Professor Tinto is now the Regional Director of the IRSS, and throughout his career he has contributed to the study of antimalarial drug resistance and the development of malaria vaccines in Sub-Saharan Africa.
